Welcome
to the
10th Mountain Division
Living History Display Group
Charles Minot Dole, an American skiing pioneer, lobbied President Roosevelt for creation of a Mountain Division. After receiving many letters, President Roosevelt consulted with General Marshall and a call went out for volunteers. Skiers, trappers, mule skinners and woodsmen volunteered. After initially training in the mountains of Washington state, a new home was found for the division. Located outside of Leadville, Colorado, the 10th Mountain Division called Camp Hale home. After training in the mountains of Colorado, the 10th spent time training at lower altitudes at Camp Swift, Texas. The 10th Mountain Division distinguished itself in fighting on the island of Kiska, Alaska and in Italy.
The US Military Cemetery in Florence, Italy contains the graves of many of the 10th Mountain Division members who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

After the war, many of the veterans of the 10th Mountain Division came home to leave their mark on the ski industry. Many of the prominent ski areas in the United States were started or managed by 10th vets, including Vail, Aspen, and Ski Cooper.
In 1982, Flint Whitlock founded the 10th Mountain Division Living History Display Group to honor his late father (a 10th Mountain Division veteran) and all the other soldiers who served with the 10th Mountain in WWII.
The 10th Mountain Division Living History Display Group is a non-profit corporation located in Colorado that reaches over 300,000 people a year through its traveling display. The 10th Mountain Living History Display Group volunteers its time in order to educate the public about the contributions of these veterans. The group presents displays at museums and in classrooms throughout Colorado, marches in parades, and keeps the legacy of the 10th alive by continually preserving the stories and artifacts of the 10th Mountain Division. We also interact with the veterans, as the pictures on the following pages illustrate.
